According to the FBI and the FTC, identity Theft is the #1 crime in the US and indeed the world. You have the Russians, the Nigerians and the Romanians all trying to get at our checking accounts, brokerage accounts and 401-k’s. The reason why is, you see we’re just at the forefront where all of our information is being converted to digital and uploaded online. So it doesn’t matter if you shred or you don’t use a computer, if you were born, died, attended school, bought real estate, have a Vons or Costco card, dealt with B of A, Wells Fargo, CitiBank, your information is out there!
So from the high tech thief in Russia to the street level junkie, today it’s more profitable and less risk to steal your INFORMATION than to break into your homes and steal your TV
Here are THE 5 areas of ID Theft.
The first area of ID Theft is Financial ID Theft. This is the one most people are aware of. Where the thief gains access to our checking or brokerage accounts and steals all of our money. Or the thief buys a car, house, cell phones and/ commits other types of credit fraud.
You see the commercials on TV and they’re cute, unless you’ve been a victim! There are reported cases where victims are continually being victimized 10 –15 years ongoing. And I realize some of you reading this blog have signed up for ID theft protection offered by your credit card companies and insurance companies, but realize these programs only cover the credit card, they’re better than nothing, but they’re just a band-aid, because Financial ID theft is only about 28% of ID Theft
There is also Driver’s License ID theft. Here the thief gets our drivers license information, maybe an employee working at a business or a health care facility or a government office is selling the information or the thief steals your wallet and uses the information to get employment or commits ID fraud or maybe gets a DUI, gets speeding tickets, that turn into a warrant. This is NOT good, because our Drivers’ License is in essence our national ID card and used by the Homeland Security and TSA at the airports! So maybe later, I get pulled over for a traffic stop and the police come back with guns drawn telling me to “get on the ground’ I say it’s not me, but they don’t know, I get arrested, booked and put in jail. CitiBank can’t help me with that.
There is also Social Security ID Theft. This is a HUGE problem! Especially concerning the immigration issue. I don’t want to get into all that, but to get employment, a person has to have a SSN. So they use my SSN, years later the IRS sends me a notice for unreported income and I owe back taxes for wages earned in Ohio. Hey, I’ve never been to Ohio, but now I have to prove that it wasn’t me. AMEX can’t help me with that. Or maybe the thief gains access to my SS account and uses up my benefits.
The Fourth type of ID theft is Character/Criminal. This is where the bad guy takes over your whole identity and is living his life as you, doing all types of mortgage fraud, money laundering, bank and passport fraud, etc. When the police start to close in, he jumps to another person’s identity and does it all over again, leaving the victim with the legal, employment and financial mess that’ll take years, if ever to unravel. In some very serious cases, some victims have only been able to distance themselves from the imposter by legally changing their names. I can’t call B of A for that.
And last, but by no means least, is Medical ID Theft. Medical ID Theft has been under the radar for many years, but now thanks to articles in AARP, Readers Digest, and Good Housekeeping, more and more people are becoming aware of how bad and how dangerous this type of ID theft is. This type is on the rise because people don’t have medical insurance, so they steal your information and go get an operation, procedure or prescriptions and you get the bill. In the Good HouseKeeping article, a pregnant woman checked into the hospital using a stolen medical card, delivered then abandoned the baby. The police knocked on the door to arrest the victim and at the same time Child Protection Services was at the victim’s children’s school to place her children in the Foster care system. Meanwhile the victim, who was still pregnant, is trying to convince the authorities of the mistake.
Here’s the sad news, there’s not a person reading this blog that in the next five years that’s not going to be hit with identity theft, that’s the reality, SO here’s the GOOD news, this is what Pre-Paid Legal is going to do for you. The very first thing we’re going to do, when you become a member of Pre-Paid Legal is we’re going to give you access to quality law firms across the US and Canada, because if any of the things I just mentioned happen to you, you’re going to need an attorney.
The second thing we’re going to do is get you a credit report. And that credit report is going to be extensive, exhaustive and it’s going to show you everything that’s on there and friends it’s going to show you the good, the bad and quite honestly the ugly too. And if you’ve got some bad and ugly on there and you need some help correcting that, you call our lawyers over the provider law firm and they’re going to help you to repair things, we’re not going to pay your bills, but we are going to write letters for you and help you to clean up your own credit report.
Thirdly, we’re going to monitor your identity with 4 soft hits a day. You’re going to know if somebody tries to go buy a house in your name so you can be proactive. We are going to consistently, constantly monitor your identity so it DOES NOT HAPPEN TO YOU, But monitoring is not enough, it’s like having the fire dept call me and tell me that my house is on fire and I say great, I’m so glad you’re there to put the fire out, and they say well we’re not going to put the fire out we’re just going to monitor it for you, but we did send a fire truck and instructions on how to put the fire out….
And that’s what some of these Identity theft programs do they leave you to do all the work, See the real cost of identity theft and identity fraud is the time, stress and effort it takes to resolve the situation. But here’s what PPL is going to if Identity Theft hits, we offer a unique service that no one else offers, true ID restoration, through our partner, Kroll Background America, they will assign licensed investigators to search all the local and national databases for you and we’re going to go in and restore your name and credit for you.
