Quick Story – Why Pre-Paid Legal, NOW

July 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

This morning I get a call from a Twitter friend who first contacted me 2 or 3 weeks about a Pre-Paid Legal membership. Unfortunately, this call falls into the category of what we call a “911 call”. In other words this person needs to talk to an attorney today, right now.

Now here’s the thing, had this person acted when they first thought about the benefits of legal protection, they would have access to a full-service law firm to address the immediate problem. One of the great benefits of a Pre-Paid Legal membership is that it only takes 24-48 hour to gain complete access to your law firm.

So don’t procrastinate, if you THINK you need the protection of our Life Events Legal Plan or our Business Owners Legal Plan just go ahead and sign up. If you’re thinking about a Will, or you have a teenage driver in the house, or there’s a job dispute, a mortgage question, a creditor problem, etc, sign up today, don’t delay. As we always say, it’s not a matter of IF you need an attorney, but WHEN.

This is Good

July 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Here is your Friday story,

This is Good.  Courtesy of: Bob Proctor

The story is told of a king in Africa who had a close friend with whom he grew up. The friend had a habit of looking at every situation that ever occurred in his life (positive or negative) and remarking, “This is good!”

One day the king and his friend were out on a hunting expedition. The friend would load and prepare the guns for the king. The friend had apparently done something wrong in preparing one of the guns, for after taking the gun from his friend, the king fired it and his thumb was blown off. Examining the situation, the friend remarked as usual, “This is good!”

To which the king replied – “No, this is not good!” and proceeded to send his friend to jail.

About a year later, the king was hunting in an area that he should have known to stay clear of. Cannibals captured him and took him to their village. They tied his hands, stacked some wood, set up a stake and bound him to the stake.

As they came near to set fire to the wood, they noticed that the king was missing a thumb. Being superstitious, they never ate anyone who was less than whole. So untying the king, they sent him on his way.

As he returned home, he was reminded of the event that had taken his thumb and felt remorse for his treatment of his friend. He went immediately to the jail to speak with his friend.

“You were right,” he said, “it was good that my thumb was blown off.” And he proceeded to tell the friend all that had just happened.” And so, I am very sorry for sending you to jail for so long. It was bad for me to do this.”

“No,” his friend replied, “This is good!”

“What do you mean, ‘This is good’? How could it be good that I sent my friend to jail for a year?”

“If I had not been in jail, I would have been with you, and not here with you right now.”

In a very unusual way, the message here unfolds into exposing the following principle about life.

“Absolutely everything happens for a purpose; and out of what seems like adversity at the time; always comes good”.

I’m sure that if any of us care to reflect back on the tragedy’s, the heartaches, the ‘bad times’ in our lives, that we discover that we have really grown or developed during that period of time:even though the reflection may still cause us discomfort in some way.

It is in this way that we slowly gather experience and wisdom, and even though we may think or feel that it is unfair, that’s the way it is.

“This is good”. Many of our life’s experiences have saved us from some form of cannibals; it’s just that we often don’t know that they have at the time.

So, for a simple example to help with awareness: next time you may begin to feel you are being ‘wronged’ by being stuck in a traffic jam, think about the cannibals that could be lurking down the road a bit,but will be gone by the time you get there.

Now that’s a bit different, but worth trying: “this is good” – despite the circumstances.

Remember: “What others do or say is their stuff; how we react, or not, is our stuff”!

And: “True Happiness in life isn’t having what you want, but wanting what you have”!

Owner ’stunned’ his company is being sued by attorney general

July 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

“As part of the mortgage foreclosure crisis, we are seeing many fraudulent schemes in which companies promise they will help desperate homeowners to modify their loans or rescue their homes from foreclosure,” Madigan said in a written statement. “These promises are false. All the con artists do is take money from homeowners and run, leaving them in a more desperate situation.

3 legal papers you shouldn’t live without

July 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Writing about incapacity is one thing. Experiencing it, even secondhand, is quite another.

My father suffered a devastating stroke last year while visiting his sister in Florida. During the final four months of his life, this once bright, capable man couldn’t decide anything more complicated than what color shirt to wear on a given day. Every other decision regarding his life — what he ate, how his bills were paid and how hard his caregivers should fight to keep him alive — had to be made by others.

Most Americans don’t have wills, but that’s not the crisis that many in the estate-planning industry would have you believe. With a few exceptions, which we’ll talk about below, most people’s quality of life won’t be much improved by a will.

Does Canada have community property laws similar to California?

July 14, 2009 · 3 Comments

Does a spouse in Canada have a current interest (as opposed, for example, to a survivorship interest) in an asset acquired by the other spouse with funds generated during marriage?

This question was posted by a Los Angeles based CPA on a national social media board. Now I don’t pretend to know the answer, but here’s what I do know. As a Pre-Paid Legal member, I have access to top quality law firms in Canada and across the US.  No need for members to rely on answers from 3rd or 4th hand sources or from some message boards. Pre-Paid Legal members simply pick up the phone, dial a toll-free number and get direct, expert legal counsel from AV rated lawyers, any province, any state.

Phony lawsuits’ didn’t help homeowners

Eight Web sites tied to alleged foreclosure rescue scam

A foreclosure consultant and attorney are accused of filing lawsuits to forestall foreclosure proceedings on behalf of more than 2,000 homeowners in California, then abandoning or failing to prosecute hundreds of the cases.

Read the entire article:

As predicted months ago, the next big wave of mortgage foreclosures would be spurred by mortgage fraud and the unscrupulous, no conscious, scammers taking advantage of homeowners desperate for help. Whenever I see an opportunity ad proclaiming the money to be made from mortgage loan refinancing, it causes me to pause. In some of these cases I can’t help but think that here you have the unemployed targeted to prey on someone losing their home.  This is a recipe for disaster.

Here are a few points to consider;

  • Never pay any money upfront for a loan modification
  • Use the services of an established law firm
  • Background check with BBB
  • Get referrals and references

Why small business owners need an attorney

July 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

When we first started our – fill in the blank – we did not hire a lawyer because we didn’t think we needed one.  As our business grew, we finally got a lawyer and wished we had consulted with a lawyer from day one.  Now we are literally “paying” for it.

The home -based business and small business owner will greatly benefit from having quick and easy access to a qualified business attorney.  A lawyer can help with;

  • legal consultations
  • legal correspondence
  • debt collection
  • contract review
  • document review
  • trial defense

Let me ask you, if I came to you and told you that one  one of the top law firms in your state was looking to expand and was willing to take you on as a client and was only going to charge you $3.75 a day for their services.  What type of things would you want done? email steven@stevenwilson.com
