Why your business needs an employee handbook

June 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Q. If staff have never had a contract and even refused to sign one do I still need their permission to cut their hours?

A. Every Employer needs to have appropriate employee manuals and dispute resolution mechanisms in place and these manuals should include specific arbitration and mediation policies. In these tough economic times, employers may have to consider lay-offs or downsizing and you need to ask yourself, am I properly protected from employee liability? Remember that the people affected by these kinds of economic decisions take it personally, not just as a business decision, and will often turn a necessity based lay-off into a discrimination claim, etc with the help of a contingency fee employment attorney. Be sure you carefully document any staff reduction, whether based on economic necessity or performance.

Fortunately Pre-Paid Legal and GoSmallBiz members have ready access to thousands of business documents including employee handbooks/manuals. In addition, business owners have a software solution designed specifically for the small business owner. See HR Document Builder.
